District Champs!

Yesterday I blogged about Abigail putting the first shot in the back of the net during the overtime shootout at their high school soccer district championship game.

It was an exciting moment, for sure! But the game was not over at that point. Each team had five players take a shot, and each team’s goalie went head-to-head against the best shooters on the opposing team.

At the end of the shootout, each team had put two goals in the back of the net, and each goalie had successfully blocked three shots.

I was so impressed by our goalie. She was playing like a woman on fire! She was amazing. To make things even more interesting… it was her birthday!

Since each team put two goals in during the first shootout, the game went into a sudden-death shootout. Each team picked their next five best shooters, and the first team to make a goal when the other team didn’t won the game-and became District Champs!

Our girls soccer program had never won the district championship, but this was our day!

They shot first, and they managed to get a goal. Then our girl took a perfect shot into the upper right corner and into the back of the net.

It was strangely silent as their second girl shot… and it was blocked!

Our girl stepped to the line. No one was breathing. She went for it… and put it in the net!

WE WON!

What an incredible moment for our girls, for their team, and for the school.

The ladies gathered around our goalie to celebrate her amazing performance (and to wish her a happy birthday!), and I happened to have my camera, so I took my own shot. As you can see, they were a little excited…
