Season 1 | Episode 1 | Psalm 100:1

Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth!

Psalm 100:1, ESV

Some of the commands in Scripture seem almost too easy. Childish, really. The Psalmist begins Psalm 100 with such a command.

Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth!

There are days when this simple command seems impossible. “How could I make a joyful noise in the midst of my crazy current circumstance?!” But I have found that choosing joy in the midst of difficult circumstances can often be the best remedy. Difficult? Yes. Prudent? Yes!

God is good all of the time! Even when our circumstances do not seem good to us (and many times our circumstances are NOT good), God is still good. He has still given us plenty to be thankful for, and plenty of reasons to choose joy. It is appropriate, then, for the people of God to allow that joy to pour out of us in making a joyful noise!

There are also days when making a joyful noise seems rather childish. We are far too refined for such a ridiculous idea. But let us remember that we must become like little children if we wish to enter the kingdom of heaven. In fact, doing something as childish as making a joyful noise to the LORD is probably the perfect response for people who fully realize that they truly are children of God!

Unfortunately, not everyone on the earth IS living as a child of God. Many millions of people who were created in the image of God still reside in the domain of darkness. Either they have never heard of Jesus, and how He died on the cross to forgive us of our sins and reconcile us to the Father, or they have heard, but have chosen not to trust Him. Either way, the command here from Psalm 100 is for ALL the earth.

Those of us who do know Jesus, who are living in the light of the fact that God is our Father… we should live our lives in such an obviously joyful way that others are compelled to understand why. They should see our lives, and our unexplainable joy in all circumstances, want to know the reason for the hope that is ours in Jesus Christ alone. And for us to truly live out this great command… to “make a joyful noise… from Psalm 100, we should be helping the process along by actively looking for ways to make a joyful noise by telling others of the goodness of our Father. There is no greater, more joyful noise than that.
