#5kMay2018 Day 8

Chugging along through the sidewalks of Apple Creek, OH

We have officially made it to week 2 of “5k Every Day in the Month of May 2018!!” If you are still with me for the challenge, go ahead and leave a comment here on the blog and let me know how you are feeling.

Today was a fairly hot run for me. After all of these months of running in the snow, I think my body is struggling to deal with 75 degrees and sunny. What is going to happen when it gets into the 90s? Maybe I’ll just melt away into nothing.

I hope not.

I kept to my nice, smooth 5k plan today. I ran 3.1 miles around Apple Creek on my “Triangle Route”. The run took me 23 minutes and 31 seconds, which was an average pace of 7:35 per mile.

I’ve been feeling good. I think my hamstring is probably back to normal, but I’ll go ahead and keep playing it safe for the rest of the week.

I ran this afternoon while listening to the Bible passages. I think this is the first run of #5kMay2018 that I listened to the 3 chapters while I ran the 3 miles. I was surprised at how quickly the 3 chapters flew by. I was barely past 1 mile when my daily reading (listening) was over! I pulled my headphones out after that.

I was also amazed at how much I did not remember what I heard. I think I personally prefer to read the passage. But hey, there is no rule against doing both!

There was definitely some interesting stuff in today’s reading (Matthew 22-24). The woes to the Pharisees and end times chapters are interesting. We could spend a lot of time unpacking those chapters, but I think what stuck out to me the most today was the end of Matthew 22.

Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question, saying, “What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?” They said to him, “The son of David.” He said to them, “How is it then that David, in the Spirit, calls him Lord, saying,

“‘The Lord said to my Lord,
Sit at my right hand,
until I put your enemies under your feet’?

If then David calls him Lord, how is he his son?” And no one was able to answer him a word, nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions. (Matthew 22:41–46, ESV)

Throughout so much of the gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John), Jesus is being hammered left and right with questions from the Pharisees, Sadducees, and teachers of the Law. In this passage, He actually initiates the conversation with a question posed to them.

I don’t believe for a moment that Jesus is trying to trick them. They have spent the last several chapters trying to trap Him and test Him. I don’t believe this is Jesus paying them back by testing or trapping them. I think Jesus is trying to help them understand an incredibly important truth that they have somehow missed.

In the kindest way possible, and in a way that they should have been able to understand, Jesus was trying to help them understand that the Christ was right in front of them.

They knew that the Christ would be from the lineage of David (which Jesus was), but they couldn’t understand how David could refer to the Christ as “Lord” -meaning that He was both greater and before, yet after.

No one was able to answer His question, nor did anyone dare to ask Him any more questions.

That is sad. They were right on the verge of a life-altering, eternity-changing answer, but they refused to go further.

I wonder about us. How would we respond to His question: “What do you think about the Christ?”

How do you answer that all-important question? Maybe you are not sure. Maybe you have questions. Don’t stop short of the answers. Press in to Jesus. He has the answers our hearts are longing for!

  1. I’m still with you Jeff… I’m starting to feel better. Today was the first day of the KT tape and it was amazing. It’s been awesome for me just to be a part of something like this and making myself do it. The scripture reading has been great for me as well. So much information and I personally love reading the Gospels. Thanks for putting this on let’s keep trucking!

    • You are doing great, Ronnie!! Keep it up!

That KT Tape is really amazing stuff. It has helped me with many minor injuries and has kept me (I believe) from major ones.

Glad this adventure has been a blessing to you! Me, too!

  2. I am still with ya and I feel fantastic! Spring is in the air and lightness is on my feet.

  3. I’m still in! Looking forward to God increasing in me spiritually and strengthening me physically each and every day.

  4. I’m still with you. I’m finding if I actually read and take notes I seem to comprehend much better than if I just listen. However, I’ve had a couple instances where I’ve needed to listen in the car while driving. But, I feel that my focus needs to be completely on the word when I’m reading it. Today’s 5K has to wait until after the awards banquet at work tonight. I really wanted to be intentional with my 3.1 miles each day. I know I have over that just from my walking today. But I’m hopeful to actually put an intentional 5K in the books tonight! It may be a slow walk on the treadmill later tonight

    • Way to go! I appreciate your intentionality and desire to really focus on what you are doing.

  5. I’m with ya bro! I’m actually feeling better each day. My goal is to beat nobody but myself. I’m slowly shaving away time and hope to run the full 5K this week with no walking!

  6. I am feeling really good. Truly enjoying having the goal of running a 5k each day. Definitely more of a challenge the days I have to push the double stroller but any challenge isn’t without its challenges!

    • Haha! I believe the double stroller increase the level of difficulty! It will make you stronger, for sure! Glad you are feeling good and enjoying the journey!

  7. Still going here in OK!! 5k is going good just wish I could run it rather than walk. Maybe all this walking and elliptical will help strengthen my knee. Time will tell.
I’m really enjoying reading everyone’s take on the chapters we’re reading. Love to hear what God reveals to others and learning together.
3 weeks to go! So let’s get er done and spur each other on along the way!

    • Glad to hear you are rocking it in OK!! You’re doing great! Did the new knee brace help?

I have also enjoyed reading what everyone else is thinking about from the scriptures. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

      • It does help a bit and if I run on an even surface(which we have SO much out here – as you know lol) it helps too. With the pain still there thought I’d wait till after the challenge to do a whole lot of running on it. I want to achieve my goal and would be so sad if I had to drop out! In February I tried to push through it and ended up making it worse. No Fun!!
Glad to hear your hamstring is feeling better!!

  8. Today was a tough one. My legs are tired, and my hips are sore. I love seeing my activity level improve though, so I’m not going to give up!! I may invest in some Epsom salts for soaking, but no giving up.

    • That’s the spirit!! You can do it! There are tough days and there are good days, but they all make us stronger in the long run!

  9. I’m still doing 5ks. Today the thought of fitting in a run was stressing me,I started running and praying that 5k would rid me of my stress and frustrations. And guess what, God did it. The last mile was hard, it made me pray harder. I’m just beginning the scripture challenge today.

    • Awesome!! That happens to me sometimes, too. I love to run first thing in the morning, if possible. It seems to make my whole day brighter.

  10. Still going, I am NOT a streak runner. I run when I have time, which isn’t every day. That being said, I like the challenge and motivation to run & read so I will get this done. Denver

  11. I’m still with you! Feeling good, though my legs are a little tired. Hoping to be able to run a 5k without walking by the end. I used to be able to do it-I want to get back to it. Thank you for doing this-this has kept my accountability.

  12. HI,
Well my legs are a little sore and tired. But I’m so glad I’m committed to this! As I have way more energy and eat less. With my new job,it sure keeps me hopping. I love to run in the morning when it’s still cooler! In the afternoon it’s a little harder!

    • That’s great! Glad to hear that the challenge is giving back!! I have more energy when I am active, too!

  13. Paul and I are still at it—walking and listening. We are doing ok. Yesterday was a better day for me, and today was a better day for Paul. But it gives us hope—hope that tomorrow just might be the day it’ll be just a little easier!! We enjoy walking first thing in the morning while it’s still cool, not many vehicles are out yet, and we get to watch the sun come up! It’s also a nice quiet world that gives opportunity to concentrate on hearing The Word. This is a great motivator for us!

    • You two inspire me! Jodi and I can be like that at times… it seems like when I am down she is up and when she is down I am up. Way to keep going and keep each other going!

  14. Randy and I are still trucking along with readings and running. We like the challenge and the sense of accomplishment!

  15. Still tagging along Jeff. Today was hot but I done much better on my running. I completed my 5k and had a 8:21 pace. That felt good. I also ran in the woods a little which was nice to be in the woods.
Coming across the verse Matthew 24:36 where it says not even the angels nor the son know the hour of his return stuck out to me. I’ve heard people predicting the return and I don’t know how you can say you can when you read this part? Not sure how you argue on that?

    • Good job!

I totally agree with you about Matthew 24:36! We should live in the awareness that He IS coming back, but claiming to know when is not helpful.

  16. 8 for 8 so far (miles and chapters)!! I didn’t know if I wanted to put my body through 31 straight days of running, since May is usually a “rest/cross-training” month. However, I have enjoyed the “change of pace” of throwing in a few walks during the week. I’ll admit that Friday I really wanted a day off, but pushed through and have felt better the past couple days. I’ve also learned a lot from the blogs and posts of the readings. This is a great group of people! Thankful to be a part of this challenge!!

    • I’m glad that you decided to join the challenge! You can take June 1 off!

I agree that this is a great group of people! This challenge has been a lot of fun this year!

  17. Got our run in today! It was one of the first days that I felt like it was getting to the point of being able to do it! At no point did I feel like I had to walk. It felt good! We also both got our reading done. It is so good just to be able to focus on what God is trying to tell us through the scripture that we read. It is different no matter how many times I read the same passage.

    • Good for you guys! You are doing great! I feel the same way about reading scripture. So many times I see something for the first time, even though I may have read that passage several times.

  18. Day 8 done. After reading that first chapter, I decided I had better wear the proper clothes took the next wedding I go to. Hate to get thrown out like that guy!

    • Ha! What a strange story! I think the point is that we need to be clothed in the righteousness of Christ, and that even though we have been invited -no one is getting in on their own. There is no “back door” to heaven. It is a sobering story, though!

  19. Still with you!
I have only been able to do a couple intentional (additional ) 5ks, but I have been greatly surpassing the total miles in the garden and mowing. It is so wonderful to have good weather so we can get outside and enjoy God’s amazing creation up close and personal.
It is great to have a group to keep me motivated to be in the Word, it can be so easy to let the things around us distract us and even keep us away from God.
Jeff – Thanks so much for putting everything together.

    • I am glad to do it! This has been a fun challenge and I have been encouraged by the participation this year. We have 5 people in my house participating in #5kMay2018, and it has been really cool to be able to track with others, too.
