The Belt of Truth

As we begin looking at each piece of the armor of God, I think it’s worth paying attention to where Paul starts. He tells us to “Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth” (Ephesians 6:14).

In helping us understand how to stand firm in the strength of the LORD and how to remain steadfast in our ongoing spiritual battle, Paul begins with truth. I don’t think that’s an accident.

Think about a belt. It might not be the most impressive piece of clothing or equipment. It’s not necessarily the first thing we notice. But it serves an important purpose. It helps secure what needs to be secured and prepares us for action. And when it comes to the armor of God, Paul begins with the belt of truth.

Why? Because truth is foundational. If we get the truth wrong, everything else is affected.

Imagine setting out on a long journey. You have a destination in mind, a map in your hand, and a clear sense of where you want to go. But somewhere along the way, you get off course by just a fraction of a degree. At first, you might not even notice. Everything looks pretty much the same. But the farther you travel, the farther you get from your intended destination.

A small deviation, over time, can lead to a significant difference in where you end up.

In his classic book Mere Christianity, C. S. Lewis pointed out: “If you are on the wrong road, progress means doing an about-turn and walking back to the right road; and in that case, the man who turns back soonest is the most progressive man.”

The point is simple: it doesn’t matter how confidently or quickly we move if we’re heading in the wrong direction. And when it comes to our faith, we cannot afford to treat truth as something secondary. We need to know what is true, believe what is true, and build our lives upon what is true.

Think of the Bible itself. Isn’t it interesting that Genesis begins with the truth of creation? “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). And John begins his Gospel by telling us the truth about who Jesus is: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1). Before John gets into the details of Jesus’ earthly ministry, he establishes a foundational truth about His identity. Jesus is the eternal Word. He is God.

And here, in Ephesians 6, Paul describes the armor of God—which is essential in our ability to stand against the schemes of the devil—by starting with truth.

For those of us who have put our faith in Jesus Christ alone for salvation, we are not called to enter the spiritual battle dressed in whatever ideas, opinions, or feelings happen to be popular around us. We are called to stand in the truth of God’s Word. To know the truth. To cling to the truth. To allow the truth to shape every part of our lives.

We cannot go into battle with our belt hanging loose. We need to be ready.

The reality of spiritual warfare, by the way, is not optional. One of the first and most foundational truths that we need to embrace is the fact that we are in a war—whether we want to be or not! “Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8, ESV).

Satan would love it if we were ignorant of the war he is constantly waging against us. He would love for us to be deceived, distracted, and drifting away from the truth. But God wants us to be aware of the devil’s schemes, to stand against him, and to first and foremost stand in the truth.

We need to be careful not to move forward in life while gradually drifting away from the truth, leaving us vulnerable to the enemy’s attacks. A small compromise might not seem significant at first. A little distortion here. A little neglect there. But over time, we can find ourselves far from where God has called us to stand.

So let’s firmly fasten on the belt of truth. Let’s make truth a priority in our lives, not an afterthought. Let’s be diligent to search, study, and savor the Scriptures so we can know the truth and hold fast to the One who Himself is the Truth.

If we are going to stand firm in the battle, as we are called by God to do, we must begin with truth.
