A Quick Trip to San Francisco

While we were walking around Pier 39, we noticed a large crowd of people standing around and obviously observing something peculiar. We went to investigate for ourselves. It turns out that everyone was looking at a bizarre, large amount of California Sea Lions.

It was kind of wild. They were just hanging out on the docks. Lots of them!

Apparently the sea lions began to populate the Pier 39 K-Dock shortly after the Loma Prieta earthquake hit San Francisco in October 1989. By early 1990 they had practically taken over the entire dock. At first, the Marina staff contacted the Marine Mammal Center to figure out how to get rid of the large, loud sea mammals. Ultimately, though, it was decided that it would be best to just let them stay.

So long boats… hello sea lions!

Now there is actually a LIVE SEA LION WEBCAM set up so that you can watch them around the clock… should you choose to do so. I have to say that they were pretty cool to see in real life, but I don’t think I’ll be popping popcorn and watching the live webcam any time soon.
