5k Every Day in the Month of May 2017 (Day 28)

I was able to get my daily 5k in this morning before church, which was a good thing because after church I ate lunch,  loaded up in a van, and spend most of the day traveling with Polen Band to Harrisonburg, VA. We are playing a Memorial Day event tomorrow at the fairgrounds, so today was a travel day.

I ran the same basic route this morning as I had run the previous day, but I was a little faster this time. I have mostly just been taking it easy leading up to the big finale full marathon planned for May 31.

Today I ran 3.4 miles at an average pace of 7:26 per mile for a total run time of 25 minutes and 38 seconds. That puts my total mileage for the week at 42.5, which is FAR from my original goal of 70+ miles for the week, but I had already decided against aiming for 70+ after my 20 miler last Friday went better than expected. My new goal was to get at least 40 miles this week and taper heading into my final week of turning at least a 5k every day (from May through May).

In the daily Bible reading, today we read through one of my favorite passages o scripture: John 15:1-11.

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.” – John 15:1-11

I know it is kind of poetic and figurative, but I feel like the philosophy to life is wrapped up in these amazing verses.

I want to abide in Christ! I want to obey his commandments, and bear much fruit, and so prove to be his disciple!!

I love that Jesus tells us this because he is interested in our joy being full!

  1. We got our 3s in each day, today between church and lunch. Not that we’re counting or anything, but only three more days in May! I don’t think we’ll stop; we’ll just slow down to something a bit more manageable.
Thanks, Jeff, for sharing your thoughts about this passage in John. I, too, want to abide in Him.

  2. Yes, those verses are perfect. My prayer as well. I also had to really ponder in Chapter 16 where Jesus says that it is better that He leaves so that the Counselor can come. While I know those verses are true and I am often amazed at how I am taken care of by the Holy Spirit and others are too in completely different ways, there is definitely a part of me that wishes I could have Jesus physically right here beside me instead. Someday. In the meantime, I am grateful that the Holy Spirit knows what I need, provides comfort for me and intercedes for me.

I had a very uninspiring run today. We ran in the middle of the day (not my favorite) in high humidity with the hot sun ( NOT my favorite running weather) up slight inclines (again, not my favorite especially with the other factors) and sweat dripping and burning in my eyeballs. My worst mental run so far and I am glad it is over. It was an even 31 minutes with an even 10 minute pace. Hoping tomorrow is better. I won’t be going out in the middle of the day again!!!!

    • I love heat runs… I feel like they prepare me for easier runs. But yes, they are often uninspiring…

I have found myself wishing that Jesus were still here in the flesh, too, but if he said it is better this way then I believe him!

  3. I had a nice (mostly) run this afternoon. My legs are tired. I’ll keep doing runs/walks after May, just not everyday. But, these 2~3’s of may have been good for me in many ways. I’m definitely a stronger person then I was before, physically and spiritually.

  4. I haven’t checked in here for a few days, but I’ve been keeping up with the 5k’s and the Bible reading each day. My 5k’s have become a mixture of walking and running because of some knee issues, but I’m praying the pain goes away soon and I can be back to normal.

  5. I ran 3.2 in 28:18 which gave me a 8:41 pace. I tried to find a easy place to run that was flat. Growing up I had asthma and I out grew it in high school but the last couple days it seems like I’ve been having a hard time getting air when running and I sound wheezy. But I’m on the home stretch.
This verse stuck out to me.
“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.”
    ‭‭John‬ ‭14:26‬ ‭ESV‬‬
He will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all things that I have said. This is awesome.

  6. We did our 5K and read for the day! Sheldon was able to get under our goal of 22 minutes. I, on the other hand, finished a few minutes after him. Something that stuck out to me in the reading is the repetitiveness in the words that Jesus used. It seemed like He said everything over and over again. I can’t help but think it was in order to drive his point home. It made me ask myself if I got the point. Have I been doing the things that he worked so hard to make clear as day?

    • That is a great time for both of you. Great job! Great challenge, as well. Sometimes I find myself skipping over parts of the Bible because, well, I already “know” those parts. How foolish of me! When I catch myself doing that, I stop, pray, and intentionally read the parts that I already thought I knew. It is amazing how much I have learned since I knew it all…

  7. I wanted to run trails in Gatlinburg so I went to the nearest trail on my map which turned out to be horse trails. The lady said it wasn’t good for running due to stream crossing…I said that’s ok, then she said it has a lot of manure and I said that’s ok…then she said watch out for horses. I tried to but realized quickly that I had to stand completely still when they came along or they spooked. At one corner I came up on two horses w two men standing by them and the horse startled and kicked its human in the thigh. I apologized, asked for directions, and plowed onward. The streams were necessary because the trail was a mess.

This passage almost makes me nervous because I feel like it’s like a last minute cramming session….only the whole world is in the balance of them getting it and passing it on. Fortunately the Holy Spirit came through in a big way!

    • Haha Derrick, I ride a lot. Hikers/walkers are bad for horses. My horse has got used to it somewhat but I’ve had many issues when coming up on people on the trails. Which is ok. The outdoors is for all to enjoy.

    • This is such a great story! Wish I could have joined you for that run!

I also sense the urgency in the words of Jesus and can resonate with the “cramming session” idea. They must have gotten it enough to pass it on. But like you said, the Holy Spirit came through in a big way! He is still coming through in a big way when we let him!
