5k Every Day in the Month of May 2017 (Day 9)
Phew… it has been a full day of driving. I am super glad that Jodi and I got up early to get our 5k in before loading the van with kids, clothes, and gear, and heading out for Iowa!
It was a beautiful, brisk morning for a run, and we got 3.1 miles in at a 10:21 per mile pace for a total time of 32 minutes and 22 seconds.
We have been on the road now for a little over 12 hours (oh, the joy of traveling with 5 kids), and I’m feeling a bit cramped (and slightly over-caffeinated after several Starbucks stops), so I am super glad that we won’t have to get out and run when we get to where we are going!
This morning I was reading Matthew 25-27, and I was mostly blown away by how much Jesus was in the driver’s seat during his arrest, trial, and crucifixion.
Yes, absolutely terrible things were done to Jesus. He was betrayed, abandoned, falsely accused, misunderstood, beaten, and brutally killed. I am not in any way trying to minimize that. Nor am I suggesting in any way that Jesus was on a “suicide mission”, but he was definitely on a mission to save us from our sins! Knowing that his death on the cross (though he was completely innocent and sinless) was God the Father’s plan to pay the penalty of sin for all of mankind, Jesus not only willingly laid down his life for ours, but he made absolutely sure that nothing could mess it up.
Consider the following passages from today’s reading alone:
“You know that after two days the Passover is coming, and the Son of Man will be delivered up to be crucified.” – Matthew 26:2
In pouring this ointment on my body, she has done it to prepare me for burial. – Matthew 26:12
And as they were eating, he said, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” – Matthew 26:21
Then Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away because of me this night. For it is written, ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’ – Matthew 26:31
Jesus said to him, “Truly, I tell you, this very night, before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” – Matthew 26:34
These passages clearly show how AWARE Jesus was of what was about to happen.
Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.” – Matthew 26:46
Jesus said to him, “Friend, do what you came to do.” Then they came up and laid hands on Jesus and seized him. – Matthew 26:50
Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into its place. For all who take the sword will perish by the sword. Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me more than twelve legions of angels? – Matthew 26:52-53
These passages clearly show how ACTIVE Jesus was in how own arrest.
He knew exactly what was coming and made sure that it happened without anyone messing it up. Why? Why would he do that?
Perhaps the best answer is found in Hebrews:
…Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. – Hebrews 12:2
He willingly and actively laid down his life for the JOY set before him -both the joy of knowing that he was making it possible for us to once and for all receive eternal life AND the joy of knowing that his faithful obedience to the Father’s will would firmly seat him at the right hand of the throne of God.

We got our 5K in this morning. It seems like it gets harder every day! Our time was 26:50 (8:39 per mile) somehow we have been getting slower rather than faster. We also read our chapters in Mathew. It is always so mind blowing to me when reading about the crucifixion. One question that came up for me is if the chief priests knew scripture so well, why did they buy the field with the 30 pieces of silver? Didn’t they know that they were fulfilling the prophecy of the Christ by doing that? So many different parts of the entire crucifixion fulfilled prophecy, but it seems like they never saw into any of it. That just seemed odd with how well they knew scripture and prophecy.
Great job! The reward is at the END of 5k Every Day in the Month of May. My experience last year (as I remember it) is that it did eventually get easier (and then, seemingly the next day, it was harder again).

I had a very strange day 9. When I woke up this morning, I was incredibly dizzy and nauseous. Knowing you have to run a 5K while your house is spinning around you and your children are watching you with alarm as you grip the wall to attempt to walk straight is a little alarming. The effects of that lasted almost half the morning. I’m pretty sure that I was dehydrated. I do a horrible job of drinking water in general and I discovered the hard way that 5k May would be a good time to change that!! I was glad that by the time I had a chance to run in the late afternoon, I was feeling much better. I had a personal best outside 5K time of 28:45, so I was happy about that. Randy ran 4.28 in 33:08 with a 7.45 pace. I was super proud of him!
I loved finishing Jesus’ blunt sermon. So many things to think about with how to use the talents I’ve been given for Him, how to care for others like Jesus requires, how to be ready for when He returns. There are no do-overs.
Wow! Be sure to drink water!!! That is scary. Great job on both runs!
I’ve tried to make this week better time then last week and move myself under 9:00 pace. I was able to pull it off today. I had a 8:56 pace for my 5k. Still under 9:00. 😊
I have a cd that I listen to on the road when I’m driving for my bible. The cd has dynamics with different voices and background sound so I feel I’m right there more. Even though I know how the scripture goes it’s still amazing. I’ve had to think so much about chapter 26 and 27. Jesus knew all that was going to happen. He knew who was going to betray him. He knew his disciples would scatter. I would think it would have been hard in the human part to not take the guards on and not let them capture him. But he was about his father’s business.
Like Missy said there was so much being filled prophesy it’s surprising that the religious leaders were the ones that wanted him dead. they must have had lots of jealousy build up on there end.
Good job on your run! That’s a great goal. Sounds like a cool way to listen to scripture!

We got our 5K in this morning. It was a beautiful morning, and we found a “more flat” place to walk just a short drive (like 2 minutes) from our place. (It’s on the other side of the huge hill!) We also listened to the three chapters for today. I am always amazed and so thankful that Jesus could have called the whole thing (crucifixion) off at any time, but He didn’t. He loves me so much that He went through all that pain–physically, mentally, and emotionally. His love is so deep, and it spurs me on to worship and live for Him.

Welcome to Iowa Jeff and family! Another all walk 5k for today. Always hard to read and think about what Jesus had to go through, but also so thankful. One verse that catches my eye, is 26:30 ” when they had sung a hymn they went out to the Mount of Olives”. This is after the last supper and it makes me wonder, what did they sing? What did it sound like? What did Jesus’ voice sound like? Did they have instruments? Did anyone complain that it was too loud? Seriously, it makes me wonder what that scene looked, sounded and felt like.

As a worship leader and lover of music, I have always loved Matthew 26:30. I get the feeling that singing a hymn or spiritual song together was a regular part of their interaction with one another. Matthew doesn’t really seem to draw much extra attention to it, but more just states it as a matter of common fact. Paul does a similar thing in his epistles.
