#5kMay2018 Day 20

img_5908Sunday, Sunday, Sunday!! Jodi and I woke up this morning and got our 5k in before church by running around Apple Creek, OH. We ran 3.3 miles in 32 minutes and 55 seconds, which was an average pace of 9:47 per mile. It felt more like we were moving at 32 minutes per mile, but we were not in any hurry.

I love Sunday mornings! There were approximately zero cars out on the roads, and it was just a beautiful setting for a nice morning run. We did see fellow #5kMay2018 participant Rhonda Shultzman out for her morning 5k, but she was way too fast for us to try to catch up with! We waved and just kept chugging along.

The thing that really stood out to me this morning while reading Luke 14-16 was in Luke 14.

Now he told a parable to those who were invited, when he noticed how they chose the places of honor, saying to them… – Luke 14:7

The part that really stood out to me this morning was the phrase “when he noticed how they chose the places of honor…”

The parable was told specifically to call them out!

This is important!

Jesus was not some passive aggressive pushover or recluse. He told this story to call them out in their wrongdoing, but He did it in such a way that they could (hopefully) see the error of their ways, repent, and choose to do better in the future. He cared enough about them to clearly call them out.

Here’s the deal, He is still doing this today! He cares enough about us to clearly call us out of our wrongdoing so that we can see the error of our ways, repent, and choose to do better in the future!

How does He do this today?

I think He primarily does this three different ways.

1. He speaks directly to us (through the work of the Holy Spirit), either to our hearts, to our minds, or even directly to our ears!

My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. – John 10:27, ESV

2. He speaks through other men and women.

I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers. And I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him. – Deuteronomy 18:18, ESV

3. He speaks through our reading of the Bible.

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. – Hebrews 4:12, ESV

Praise God that He still speaks to us today! I am so thankful that He loves us and cares for us and speaks kindly with words of affirmation towards us. I am also thankful that He loves us enough to rebuke us when we are heading in the wrong direction or thinking incorrectly about a subject.

What is He speaking to you today?

  1. Today was a interesting day. I ran a full marathon in Cleveland which was something I’ve never done but have been training for. I first started off with being nervous started off the first couple miles a little over 9:00 pace and wanted to be in the high 8:00’s. I finally was able to see some 8:30 pace until mile 16 to 17 I saw my pace hit hit the 9:00’s and moved to the 10:00 pace. I knew that was not going to get me my goal of under 4 hours. My mind went to disappointment to defeat. I was able to finish in 4:19:42 with a 9:50 pace. It’s been amazing being a part of the 5k may 2018. I’ve seen different people say they needed this for accountability or motivation. That’s awesome. Even if your not hitting your goal at least your doing it. Keep it up.
This verse stuck out to me. “Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.”
    ‭‭Luke‬ ‭15:7‬ ‭ESV‬‬
Also “Just so, I tell you, there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents.””
    ‭‭Luke‬ ‭15:10‬ ‭ESV‬‬
Both these keep running through my head.

  2. We ran out 5k this morning in humid Texas. We forgot how nice it is to have a dry heat to run in. We also read today! I find the part about the rich man and Lazarus to be a good reminder to always be kind and generous.

  3. I haven’t been the greatest at checking in every day, but I’m on track with my 5k’s! It really has been a refreshing time for me and I’m feeling better physically Day by Day. Unfortunately I fell behind on my daily reading. Not proud of it, but I must confess. No book for me. (Insert sad face here)

    • Way to keep going! It’s not too late to catch up on the reading! You may have lost the book, but you can still gain the joy and encouragement of reading the Bible!!
